When a 51-year-old vegetable vendor from Raigad recently presented to the state-run JJ Hospital with severe stomach discomfort that numerous local doctors had been unable to treat for over a year, doctors discovered a pretty typical cause of appendicitis.

However, the diagnosis of the patient, Mr. Dagdu Shigvan, was difficult due to a "rare" anomaly called situs inversus totalis. Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar, who heads the surgical department at JJ Hospital in Byculla, defined the condition as "all organs in reverse or mirror position from their original position."

Given his unique anatomy, the JJ Hospital surgical team recommended a laparoscopic exploration so that surgeons could hunt for the issue with a camera whose pictures could be enlarged several times over.

Dr. Bhandarwar explained that the laparoscopic evaluation revealed that his liver was on the left upper abdomen rather than the right, his stomach was on the right, and his appendix was on the left. He revealed that this was the third patient in the history of JJ Hospital with a complete situs inversus totalis.

Additionally, he also stated that the incidence of situs inversus totalis is 1 in 10,000 people. On Friday, the patient underwent minimally invasive appendix removal surgery.
